LG 800 G SECURITY CODE? SIM?

OK I hate to sound really ignorant, but this is my first cellphone; the Samsung LG 800 G.....and so far I really like it.........still getting acquainted with it.

But WHAT THE HECK is 'SIM"??? ; what does it mean and what does it do?

and just how do I get a security code?
